7 students are suing the VA for failing to adequately diagnose and treat them for serious injuries suffered in a motor vehicle accident, a lawsuit filed in federal court on Wednesday.
The suit alleges that the VA failed to perform medical evaluations on the students after the crash, and in some cases delayed treatment of them even after the injuries became life-threatening.
The lawsuit also alleges that VA hospitals in Illinois failed to adequately respond to their patients’ injuries and treatment needs, and failed to protect their medical records.VA spokeswoman Lisa O’Dell said in a statement that the lawsuit is the latest in a series of federal lawsuits brought by students and their families, which she called “just the latest attempt to intimidate VA employees.”
The VA has denied the allegations in the lawsuit.VA has had several years to resolve claims of medical malpractice at the VA hospitals.
It has also been embroiled in multiple lawsuits and internal investigations by the Department of Veterans Affairs.
